Choosing the right steam generator is one of the most important steps in building a steam shower that performs properly. A unit that is too small may struggle to fill the room with steam efficiently, while an oversized unit can add unnecessary cost and electrical demand. This guide helps you calculate your steam room size, account for materials and installation conditions, and match your space to the right steam generator size.

Why Steam Generator Sizing Matters

Steam shower performance depends on more than just the square footage of the room. Ceiling height, wall materials, insulation, glass, exterior exposure, and overall room design all affect how much steam output is needed. Proper sizing helps deliver faster steam production, more consistent comfort, and better long-term efficiency.

Step 1: Calculate Your Steam Room's Cubic Footage

Length × Width × Height = Cubic Feet

Example: 4 ft × 5 ft × 8 ft = 160 cubic feet

Step 2: Adjust for Wall and Room Materials

Wall / Room Material Recommended Multiplier
Ceramic or Porcelain Tile × 1.0
Natural Stone (Marble, Granite, Slate) × 1.5
Glass Block Walls × 1.25
Acrylic or Fiberglass × 0.9
Outdoor or Unheated Space × 1.25

Example: 160 cu. ft. × 1.5 for natural stone = 240 adjusted cubic feet

Step 3: Consider Additional Sizing Factors

  • Ceiling height over 8 feet: Taller spaces require more output.
  • Exterior walls or colder climates: Add a 1.1× to 1.25× adjustment.
  • Large glass enclosures: Glass increases heat loss, especially in frameless designs.
  • When in doubt, size up slightly: Better to have a little extra capacity than a unit that struggles.
